Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

I NEED MY HEART.  Obviously Alexandra Bracken doesn’t know this because she broke my heart into a million tiny pieces and glued it back together.  The book undid me completely; I felt a huge range of emotions and I’m in high emotional distress.  But Alexandra Bracken knows how to write, how to keep a reader on the edge of her seat.  I have so much respect for her right now, because she wrote a kick-a sequel.  It captivated me and I’m so glad I got this book; I probably couldn’t have waited for it.  I read this and the first book in one night.  The book has new characters, old characters and more layers of complexity to the plot.  Now I have to wait for the third book…

Ruby is still an amazing character.  I love her, care about her and want what’s best for her.  In the last book, she made a decision that killed me.  Killed me.  And I still respect and love her for it.  She lets you jump right into the action and I loved how she wasn’t all angsty.  There wasn’t a lot of “my life sucks I want…blah”, but more of “how do I fix this”.  She was “Team Reality” and I loved her (and Chubs) for it.  But I really want to talk about the new characters, now.  Vida was awesome.  It was so interesting to see her perspective because she loved the League and Cate, and she’s very defensive.  Vida is awesome because she’s mean in a funny, blunt way.  I initially hated her, but she’s just too funny.  I love the relationship she has with Chubs!  It’s not romantic, not even friendship, but they annoy the heck out of each other.  Jude is an adorable little kid, too.  He’s very innocent and friendly, and he’s a good friend to Ruby.  I like the diversity he adds to the group.  I also like that, despite the circumstance, he’s still hopeful.  And Cole!  *gush* He's so pretty and funny.  I love him. Ruby can have Liam, but I want Cole.  I thought he was going to be boring and uptight, but he's a sweetheart.

The plot!  I was so immersed in the book, in the world, that I forgot everything else.  The story was gripping and it was a definite page turner.  I care about the characters and I want them to have their happy endings.  I was really surprised that this book measured up to the first one, that they're equally amazing!  I love the writing and narrative, and unlike many first person books, I didn't feel the POV was restricting.  I highly recommend the book and I don't want to wait for the third one.  I could have just read them all in one day.  Alexandra Bracken is very talented and I love her work!  I cannot rave enough about her and I hope you enjoy the book as well.
